February Caregiver of the Month

FebCaregiver2016
Denise Shannon, RN, BSN, NHA, Administrator, CovenantCare at Home: Home Health & Hospice, is the winner of the February Hospice Caregiver Award presented by Horan & McConaty. Denise was nominated by Sally Carey.

Denise Shannon exemplifies the best of hospice care through her 20+ years of enduring commitment to excellence of care, ethics, leadership and heartfelt compassion for all. Denise has been a nurse, a clinical director, a manager of: hospice teams providing home care and teams working in skilled nursing facilities, an acute care, in-patient hospice facility; has served as a skilled nursing facility administrator, a corporate compliance officer and is currently an administrator of a non-profit Home Health, Hospice and Private Duty organization.

Denise has the breadth and depth of skills and knowledge to develop new hospice programs entirely from scratch & manuals of Conditions of Participation. She has also been called upon to salvage struggling programs. With deft leadership, she inspires and invigorates the staff while honing the core processes to allow them to meet and exceed all standards achieving new levels of success.

Denise has sustained a strong commitment to professionalism and the development of hospice personnel as evidenced by her many years of leadership of the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association of CO, The Colorado Healthcare Ethics Forum – CHEF – and as a board member of Colorado Center for Hospice and Palliative Care – COCHPC – now the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of the Rockies. She has strategically invested a great amount of her time in those organizations toward conference planning and continuing education to help develop and elevate the practice of hospice care for everyone in the region. Her gifts of seeing the strengths of any person, program or situation and fostering the best practices and personal standards inspire leadership within each and every staff member. She has been a mentor to many nurses, doctors, CNAs, social workers, volunteers and volunteer coordinators, personal caregivers, facility staff and others.

Denise sets an example for all in leading by actively considering what is the right thing to do for the patient and family, the staff and any relationship involved, including regulatory ones, and then doing it in as loving a way as possible. Her generous laughter is a clarion call to all who hear her to take heart, do your best, live lightly and care deeply. Her competence is only out-sized by her heart.
