Meet Our October Hospice Caregiver Award Recipient

OctCaregiver2014

Joan Hummel, Grief Counselor at Porter Hospice/St. Anthony Hospice, is the winner of the October Hospice Caregiver Award presented by Horan & McConaty.  She was nominated by Gretchen Norman who had the following to say about why she nominated Joan.

Joan Hummel is not only an amazing bereavement counselor, she is an amazing co-worker. She is a wealth of knowledge with resources, history, procedures and policies within our company, the community and the world in general! She exudes compassion and is the model of having an all accepting, strength-based approach to our bereaved family members and to our staff. Recently, it happened AGAIN in one of the grief groups I was facilitating. Joan’s name got brought up by one of the participants who is seeing her for individual grief counseling. Several other people in the group perked up as they are being followed by her in bereavement. I added that in years past, having my office next to Joan’s office, I would hear such robust laughter during the sessions that it was hard to believe something as heavy as grief counseling was going on in there. Joan later explained they talk about a lot of things, some very funny things – perhaps as a way of keeping the grief in perspective I imagine. In my group that night, there was such enthusiasm and faith that this ‘miracle worker’ named Joan would be there for them to deal with the grief. And I know Joan, she will!

Congratulations to Our September Hospice Caregiver of the Month Award Recipient

SeptCaregiver2014Kristin Ayon, CNA, at Agape Hospice is the winner of the September Hospice Caregiver Award presented by Horan & McConaty.  She was nominated by Corinne Baker, RN, Agape Hospice, who had the following to say about why she nominated Kristin.

We had a very difficult family and patient recently and they kept pushing Kristin Ayon (CNA) away.  Kristin could see that our patient needed our help, and she continued to show up for visits with a very positive attitude, slowly gaining the trust of our patient family.  Although she was frustrated, knowing how much she could offer and how much the patient needed, she remained very professional, with a result of success.

She was compassionate & caring, altering her daily schedule for this family.  She kept her humor and love for her patient shined each and every day.  As the RN on this case I found her assistance a vital part of keeping our patient safe, comfortable, allowing her in the end to have a peaceful hospice death.

Kristin is a valuable part of our team.  The small little box certainly wasn’t big enough to praise Kristin’s skills, professionalism and all the times I observed her holding the hand of a dying patient.  She is a top notch CNA!  She was put on this earth to be a “Care Giver.”
